CARING FOR DENIM

Looking for advice on caring your for jeans and denim tops? Here are four tips that you can share with your fellow denimheads out there.

LESS LAUNDERING

It's best to wash denim as little as possible, not only to prevent shrinking & fading, but to conserve water, which lessens negative impact on the environment. When they are ready for a freshening up, turn jeans inside-out & wash separately in cold water and line dry, if possible.

GIVE UP ON GIMMICKS

Some believe washing dark jeans with coffee will keep their colour longer. The truth is that denim garments are subject to fading if machine-washed and dried. Hand-wash them in a tubful of water, soak them up to 30 minutes with mild detergent, and swirl to loosen any set-in sediment.

DENIM, DE-COATED?

Embellished or coated denim that's professionally dry-cleaned can actually damage fragile details like embroidery, and over time, wear away waxy finishes. Instead, soak your specialty denim in cold water for up to 10 minutes without detergent, then lay flat until dry.

AVOID COLOR BLUNDERS

There is no harm in two very dark jeans going in for a soak together, but there's no telling what sort of tint you'll wind up with when dealing with lighter and more vibrant colours. Good rule of thumb: if the method seems dubious, leave your denim out of it.

MORE CARING TIPS

Here's the word on how to care for your speciality Levi's® products.

SHRINK-TO-FIT®

They're made from untreated raw denim, and the more they're worn, the more they fade, whisker, scruff and wrinkle, creating a unique fit. When necessary, soak them in soap for 20 minutes (the warmer the water, the more they'll shrink). Drip dry, then wear them damp until they've molded to your body.

CARING FOR SELVEDGE

The premium-quality, raw, heavyweight denim is painstakingly woven on traditional shuttle looms. They're crafted with major care; you must return the favour. On the rare occasions they're washed, soak them in cold water with mild detergent, gently rinse and air-dry.

CARING FOR TWILL

Though twill garments are quite durable, they prefer a stress-free existence. If stained, gently scrub with an up-down motion, then rinse in cold water.

CARING FOR STA-PREST®

These bad boys are designed to keep a permanent crease and remain wrinkle-free at all times. The trick is not to let them linger in the dryer for too long.

CARING FOR LEATHER

If confronted with a liquid stain, make leather all better by blotting a clean cloth. Should a more serious spot set in, consult with a professional leather cleaner.

CARING FOR COTTON

Fear not wrinkles and shrinkage. Give just-washed cotton garments a stretch, then dry using low heat. Iron to release creases and spray-starch to keep things crisp.
